Hideous Progeny

by Emily Dendinger

North Park University | Fall 2011

I was fortunate to get a second crack at this script I love when I was invited to work as a guest artist with North Park University’s undergraduate theatre program. Acting in many ways as educator and director simultaneously for the first time, I was inspired by the maturity of these young artists. They were game for exploring the work in ways they were unaccustomed to, and their performances were full of honesty and integrity.

We worked with a new draft of the script – revised for the Boston premiere – and continued to tweak the text with Emily. Where I felt that I had been bold conceptually with the first production, here I stayed more true to period and felt that the piece was, as a result of that conceptual choice and the age-appropriateness of the young actors, a more clear, more resonant embodiment of this story. This experience taught me a great deal about concept when it comes to new plays, and also about the joy of collaborating with dedicated undergraduates.
