70 Secrets of Marmadlade Kittens

by Gabrielle Reisman

UTNT (UT New Theatre) | Spring 2013

Each spring, the Department of Theatre & Dance at UT showcases the work of graduating MFA playwrights through UTNT. In Spring 2013, there were two full productions, one enhanced reading, and one workshop reading featured in the festival, and I had the privilege of directing this piece.

The script was in process throughout our work - including during the several week gap we took in our rehearsals for the 2013 Cohen New Works Festival. Indeed, Gabrielle continued to make changes to the script and we continued to finesse the production through our closing night performance.

Kittens follows a family living as contract farmers on an Iowa hog farm. An ancient goose named Frank serves as the grounding force of the family, as two possibly sinister ceramic kittens beckon Quinn away from motherhood and toward adventure. Floating between the present days and ten years previous, this play is at once poetic and deeply, painfully real.

It was thrilling to work on a script still finding its way into and through the world, and I was fortunate to have an excellent, energetic, flexible cast.
